Dancing the Night Away

One thing I really love about the school the girls go to is their after school program.  It runs for one hour after the regular school day ends, each Monday through Thursday.  The list of choices is posted at the beginning of each semester and as soon as it is live on-line, the parents pore over the offerings.  When our kids get home we sit down and make our choices.  Because each class is limited in size, you need to select a first, second and third choice for each day you would like to do an activity (with a max of three).  And since we have been here, the hottest ticket in town is always dance.  With only 20 spots available for each grade it has always been something of a trick to get a spot in years past.  This year, with the addition of Bollywood dance, there were plenty of opportunities for everyone to participate.  Thank goodness.

The kids that chose dance have been learning new moves, choosing music to put those moves into practice and then practicing until they have it down pat.  Finally, in late January, all of that practice pays off when they present their dances at the all school recital.  That recital was last Thursday night.

We had a pride of very excited first-grade kitty cats.  They were itching to show us their moves...and show us, they did.

And when they took the stage, the cuteness was unbearable.  (and it was really dark, so very hard to capture anything close to adorable)

The school streams the event live because they understand the fact that many of us are far away from the family and friends that would usually attend such recitals.  The problem with streaming is that you are reliant on technology and sometimes that fails you.  As it did with the first portion of the recital...which means Stinkerbell and MadHatters dances were both missed.  But never fear - I went to the school assembly the next day and did my own filming.  Enjoy the Cool Cats Roaring.

This is MadHatters second year in dance and that means she is a pro at performing on stage in front of an audience.  But she also has a new dance teacher, who is a bit more abstract and free form when it comes to dancing.  So the bugs did few real dance steps, but in the end, they had a good time and that is all that matters.

Afterward, with their bouquets in hand, they took a few more bows, danced a few more steps and we headed home, well past their bedtimes, tired and happy and proud of a job well done.
