Which came first, the chicken or the egg? In this case, it isn't up for debate. Because, in this instance, we know for a fact that the chicken wandered over, then laid the egg, and just skedaddled. All while L and I were trying to have a long, leisurely lunch.
Yep, she just wandered into our patio paradise, clucking and squawking about how the rooster never listened to her and didn't even notice when her feathers were a different color and how he just sat around the house all day (at least that is what I got out of it) and nestled herself into the greenery behind us and laid an egg.
I do not jest.
L, having had her (not even 4 year old) son get into a fight with the school rooster just a few weeks before, was a bit apprehensive. Understandably.
The hen didn't have the same apprehension. She peeked out to make sure no one was watching...
and went about her business. We were assured by our waiter that she did this every afternoon at this time and would leave immediately after she was done. He was absolutely right but it was still a bit awkward. Do you give her some privacy? Do you continue eating? Do you wander over and watch? Do you get the heck out of dodge in case she sees you as a predator? We were both newbies to this, and were a little lost as to the correct etiquette. We didn't have to discuss it for long, because before our entrees arrived she was on her way out.
The next photo shows the hen leaving and L, still not too enthused about the whole thing. (Again, don't blame you)
A few minutes later our waiter comes out, retrieves the egg and takes it inside. L and I kid that this could only happen here...only about 10 minutes from tourist central, but in a whole other world.
We finish our lunch. A lot more relaxed now that we know we aren't going to be randomly pecked at by a hen laying an egg within 3 feet of our table. And suddenly, this appears...
Our waiter had a wicked sense of humor. And we had to try it...
It was fresh. I will give you that. But maybe a bit too fresh. It was still warm from being boiled but we didn't see it that way. In our minds it was still warm from being laid just minutes before. I like my farm fresh eggs as much as the next person: maybe just not this recently farm fresh.
